What is a network?

A network in IT is a group of two or more computers linked together. There are many types of networks but the most common ones are the LAN ( Local Area Network ) and WAN ( Wide Area Network ) . Computer networks are built using cables, switches, routers, firewalls, servers, etc. Computers that facilitate resources ( files, databases,  applications, etc. ) on the network are called servers and the devices connected to the network are either called nodes or clients.

What does a network administrator/engineer do?

A network professional design, build, and provide ongoing support to a computer network. he also establishes operation policies and procedures related to the network.

What do you need to build a network?

To build a very basic network, you only need a switch to connect two or more computers together. Most computer networks are more advanced than that, and use multiple switches, a router, multiple servers, and a firewall.

What are the network essentials every network professional must know?

Networking covers a huge range of technologies in hardware and software. At the very minimum, a network professional needs to have an understanding of the physical layer of a network, that includes network topologies, cabling, be able to understand, install and configure a switch, a router, and a firewall etc. He needs to have a basic understanding of network protocols like ICMP, TCP, IP, NTP, Telnet,BGP, etc. He need to able to install, configure and troubleshoot network components like Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP servers, etc.

How can you get started in the networking field?

My suggestion would be that you learn as much as you can about all the networking components I mentioned above. buy a switch and try to link computers together, and as you progress in your learning setup a server with active directory and try to join those computers to a domain. networking is a craft, the more you do it the better you get at it so try to get your hands dirty as much as possible.

In this page, and basically all over this site you will find many step-by-step tutorials that can help you get started installing many things you need in a network. If you can’t find what you are looking for, don’t be shy to ask.

What is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name System. The DNS system was invented by Paul Mockapetris in 1983. Before the DNS system was invented, there was a single file called hosts.txt in every computer which needed to be updated manually every time there was a change in the computer network called ARPANET at the time. What does…
